Poland's Gen. Jaruzelski has left hospital after treatment
The former leader remains a divisive figure in Poland because of his decision to impose martial law on Dec. 13, 1981, in an effort to crack down on the fledgling Solidarity movement, the trade union that launched Poland's peaceful anti-communist revolt in 1980. .
Young DM inventor snatches spotlight
A Des Moines boy got a nice bit of free national advertising for his latest invention - The Snatcher - when he appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" last week.
Alek Luong's device, which he demonstrated on the daytime television talk show, is essentially a wide box with teeth that attaches to the front of a lawn mower. The box has wheels, and as the wheels turn, brushes push items such as dog poop, golf balls and walnuts into the box.
"The idea is to pick up things before they get to the lawn mower," said Alek, a fifth-grader at Lawson Elementary School in Johnston. .

In a workshop on March 20 at Meridian Park Elementary School, city officials asked citizens for their input about the new facility.
The new City Hall will be built at the site of its original Annex at the intersection of North 175th Street and Midvale Avenue North. The city has purchased the 1.7-acre Highland Plaza site as well as a 1.2-acre site of office and retail buildings located east of the Annex. The site does not include the Grease Monkey on North 175th Street.
The total cost of the project is projected to be close to $25 million. Over a period of time, the city saved $12 million to begin the project and plans to borrow the remaining amount, paying off the debt with an allocation of real estate excise tax and money traditionally used for rent. A property tax increase to finance City Hall will not occur.
