Time to grow up about driving

The phone gets dialed, the cigarette lit and the coffee mug is put back into play. Three items, two hands not on the steering wheel at the same time and someone who should know better zooming off to start their day and woe-be-unto anyone who might be in their way. The stray jogger. The delivery guy. The police officer.

These people do seem to have the ability to pound their horn if you get in the way. Or flip someone off.

It has been suggested that there be no-phone zones around schools. Folks, do we really need a law to tell us how to behave responsibly? Are we really that rude and self-absorbed that we can't gets the kids to school without a phone conversation?

If a law is enacted I'd suggest that anyone breaking it be hit with two penalties. One, their phone is immediately smashed with a hammer.

Paying back: Former Dover woman plans 46-mile trek to help others

There was a time when Stacey Baker couldnt put one step in front of another, so her commitment to run and cycle 46.2 miles this month is a testament to her emotional as well as physical strength.

The former Dover resident is indebted to an international foundation that helped her recover from Guillain Barre Syndrome, and she believes in paybacks. But the Durham, N.C., resident also is paying it forward to help other GBS victims who find themselves struggling with the life-threatening experience.

She is Running for a Reason to raise funds for the GBS/CIDP (Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy) Foundation International.

Ten years ago, Baker was a Dover High senior, captain of a state-bound volleyball team and looking forward to a full year of activities when she was stopped suddenly by a mysterious illness that zapped her strength and ultimately left her paralyzed.

LOVE, FRANKLIN-STYLE

FRANKLIN — Four couples gave their significant others the gift of themselves for Valentine's Day.

The couples all township residents were married by Mayor Brian Levine on Thursday morning in a civil ceremony. Each had a different story to tell before exchanging vows in front of two witnesses and a handful of family members.

For Donna Gower, 57, and Ernest Albert Hofer, 64, who live in the same housing development, it was about a year ago when they spotted each other on bicycles.

"We lived in close proximity, so we saw each other bicycling, and so we started bicycling together," Hofer said. "One thing led to another."

The couple chose to get married on Valentine's Day because two of Hofer's sons were born on Valentine's Day during different years. Next, they are planning a honeymoon trip in March to a ski resort out West and plan to travel to Africa in 2009.

Soldier's words from Iraq can inspire us all

At the end of each of those briefings, the chaplain introduced "The Hero of the Day," a fallen soldier. That part always held Bart Newman's attention.

Day after day, month after month, the men's stories haunted Newman. He was a husband and father just like many of them. They hadn't gotten out alive. Maybe he wouldn't either.

He thought about his 18-month-old daughter, Kate, and what he would say to her about life if he didn't come home to say it.

Bart Newman had a lot to say about God; about choosing a husband and about what she might do with her life.

He told his baby girl to make Jesus the center of her life because there was nothing more important than figuring out where she'd spend eternity when she died.

He told her about his relationship with her mother, Jules, as he calls her; that he believed we could have marriages of passion, devotion and love if we'd only see our relationship with our spouse the way God does and not the way the world does; and instead of asking what she would do with her life, ask herself "how will eternity be different because of me?"

The God that Bart Newman hoped Kate would one day believe in was the same one at the center of his prayers.

Fed's Lacker says further rate cuts quite possible

Inflation is still higher than I would like to see it personally ... I just don't think it is a sensible strategy to put our inflation objectives on the shelf for the duration."

In response to audience questions, Lacker noted that one of the influences on rising prices was the dollar's declining value against other major currencies, which makes everything from imported oil to consumer goods more costly.

"The falling value of the dollar externally obviously provides some impetus to inflation domestically through input prices," he said. The dollar has lost value amid concerns about U.S. economic prospects and because investors foresee U.S. interest rates declining.

The Fed has cut interest rates by a full percentage point since mid-September to protect the U.S. economy from a slumping housing market and global credit crunch.

Silvio Berlusconi, the 'Great Seducer', set to charm his way back into ...

If he cracks sexist jokes about women secretaries, it does him little harm. When he was forced to apologise publicly to Veronica Lario, his long-suffering wife and a former actress, for his excessive attentions to other attractive women he probably gained votes rather than lost them.

There is a similar sneaking admiration for his defiance in the face of corruption charges, and many right-wing voters agree with him that he is persecuted by left-wing magistrates. Attempts to prove that he had Mafia ties or to investigate the origins of the money with which he made his initial fortune as a Milan property developer have all run into the sand.

Last weekend, comparing himself to Tony Blair, Mr Berlusconi said that he would serve for only three years of his next five-year term, and would then hand over to "an Italian Gordon Brown".

Blaze kills 100 animals

Ypu may be surprised to find out, it doesn't really show how good your Fire Department truely is. Since fires are only 20-25% of the total call volume. Insurance will build me a new house, but those medics that ISO does not count, saved the life of my neighbor. ISO does not rank how well the Hazardous Materials Team responds to incidents. ISO counts Water Supply, how well it is applied, how fast it gets applied, and for how long. By the way, what is your Non-Hydranted ISO Rating? How long is your longest Tender Shuttle? Or are you just a citified Firefighter with all of the conviences of home? By the way, you might want to look up http://www.pwcgov.org/default.aspx?topic=040026000110004566. Pay attention to the video! Read and absorb the report. Their ISO ratin is a "1"! Then come talk with me about Vollies and Career.
