| Very risky to fiddle with the squiggle
Oh dear. The marketing boffins at the ABC have got their hands on the squiggle because they believe it doesn't communicate effectively in the 21st century. The iconic brand identity with its superb design represents an organisation with a reputation for excellence and leading-edge intelligence. By all means play with the brand identity as it is expressed in different media and enjoy the flexibility that the mark allows, but please don't go back to the drawing board to create other designs that will only undermine the squiggle. That would be an act of corporate suicide, as it will only create confusion among those of us who instantly recognise and respond to the brand mark. BMW makes engines, cars, racing cars, bicycles and motorcycles, and you only ever see the one BMW badge.
More snow, skiers and snowmobilers makes for more deaths by avalanche
Forest Service National Avalanche Center in Ogden, Utah, eight deaths this winter were in Washington, five in Colorado, four each in Wyoming and California, three each in Montana and Utah, and one each in North Dakota, New Hampshire, and Wyoming.
Nine were snowmobilers, eight skiers, six climbers or hikers, five snowboarders, one snowshoer, and one was shoveling off a roof.
Doug Abromeit, director of the National Avalanche Center, has no solid figures on how many people ski and snowmobile in avalanche country, but figures the number is rising, because manufacturers are selling more gear, trailhead parking lots are full, and there are new magazines dedicated to backcountry skiing.
So what's driving the boom?
"These days you are lucky to get one untracked line at a major ski area," Abromeit said.

Political background to the CPE protests
We are reposting the following series of articles on the revolt of the French working class in November-December 1995 in the hope that it will help to clarify the political background to the present upheaval in that country. The ongoing revolt by millions of youth and workers is a further response to the effort by the French ruling class to slash or eliminate entirely the social gains made in decades of struggle. In November-December 1995, the working class revolted against efforts by the right-wing regime of Prime Minister Alain Juppé to reform the social security system, just as today the government of Dominique de Villepin is reforming Frances labor laws. In 1995 millions of workers, led by the transport workers in particular, rejected the claims made by the government and the media and recognized the maneuver for what it wasan attempt to shift the burden of the social costs on to the back of the working population.
Several bills up for passage in state House
The Chilton County Relay for Life group is getting ready to make their big walk in just two months. This year they had a goal set to raise $201,000 along with having 55 teams. So far, they are only nine teams away from having their goal, and they are working on reaching their goals for this year's total Relay for Life donation. Area Director Morgan Choat said, "Everyone needs to be registered for their Relay for Life teams by our next captain meeting on March 5 to make sure that we will have enough T-shirts for everyone on the teams." Muscatine! the Musical update: Costumes inspired by fashions of 1896
MUSCATINE, Iowa — Ostrich plumes and parasols swaying in a sea of frothy lace and bodacious bustles will dress up the stage at the world premier of "Muscatine! the Musical" Friday, Oct. 12. The original costumes for the play are inspired by the fashions of 1896, the year of the musical’s setting. Marie and Peter Press of Muscatine wrote the book for the musical, which is built against the backdrop of a bustling river town that once hosted the historical characters of Buffalo Bill Cody and Mark Twain and fancy world travelers, such as the musical’s leading lady, Lulu Belle Larkin. Marie plays the role of Lulu Belle, who dresses up Muscatine’s late 19th century social scene with elegant Parisian fashions. Costume concepts for the production began with a technological walk through history, via the Internet.Peter selected images that represented the era and the spirit of the musical and printed them out to create a scrapbook of ideas."The more authentic the costume, the better the audience will understand the time period and the nuances of that time period in the script," said Peter.He passed his ideas on to the mother-and-daughter design team of Mary Taeger and Lisa Cameron-Babcook of Burlington.Cameron-Babcook opened a costume shop in Burlington in 1995.
