Wind Tunnel Tuneup: Faster Bikes

The numbers on the meter provide a relative measure of Gotti's aerodynamic efficiency. As the wind flows past Gotti, some of it is interrupted. This causes the floor that takes up most of the center of the tunnel to dip and sway ever so slightly. Since the floor is actually the top of a massive aerodynamic balance, the slightest movement is measured and recorded by a bank of computers. Later these second-by-second samplings will be distilled into information that hopefully will help Gotti win the world's best-known bicycle race.

As the test begins, the numbers on the display fluctuate randomly. Then, as Gotti lowers his head, they begin to drop: 3.0, 2.82, 2.65. The numbers give Gotti a relative measure of the degree to which his bicycle and body impede airflow. Smaller numbers represent less aerodynamic drag.

Nasdaq volume slipped 10% below Thursday's level.

For the week, the NYSE ended 1.7% higher, while the Nasdaq added 0.7%.

Declining stocks led advancers on Friday by about 3-to-2 on both exchanges.

Priceline PCLN ran ahead of the pack with a 21.63 gain to 123.86 after reporting Thursday that Q4 earnings jumped 66%. The 22% spike sent the online travel firm's shares to new highs, after it cleared a low handle.

Wal-Mart WMT weighed on the Dow with a slip of 0.53 to 49.44 on above-average volume after a drop in January sales.

Scotsman takes the wheel at Coles

WESFARMERS has lured the chief executive of British car parts and bicycle retailer Halfords to run its newly-acquired Coles supermarket business with a $2 million welcome mat.

Scotsman Ian McLeod, 49, whose current employer generates annual revenue of less than 10 per cent of the $20 billion business he will soon be managing, will receive a $2 million signing-on payment, another $2 million in annual salary and stands to make up to $2.4 million in annual bonuses.

Wesfarmers managing director Richard Goyder said Mr McLeod had "lived and breathed retail" since joining British retail chain Asda as a graduate trainee in 1981, where he played a leading role in the turnaround engineered by chief executive Archie Norman in the 1990s.

Mr Goyder said Mr McLeod was at the top of Wesfarmers's list of candidates to run Coles's food, liquor, fuel and convenience store business, and declared himself unconcerned at the new recruit's association with US retailer Wal-Mart's ill-fated German operation.

Viktor Schreckengost (1906 - 2008) Career Produced an Elegant Design ...

Melding Bauhaus functionalism and an American sensibility, Viktor Schreckengost pioneered industrial design for products from toys to dinnerware.

Mr. Schreckengost lacked self-promotional drive, yet managed to make himself a presence in most households by the sheer quantity and variety of products he designed. Flashlights and riding mowers, bicycles and fire-engine pedal cars for children all flowed from his drafting table. He once told an interviewer, "If we sold 400,000 of something, I felt I was on the right track."

Man on bicycle dies after crash on U.S. 13 on Eastern Shore

A 43-year-old man who was riding a bicycle along U.S. 13 died this morning after being hit by a vehicle that left the scene of the crash, state police said.

Marvin A Hines, of the 2700 block of Fisher’s Circle in Melfa, was riding in the right southbound lane of the highway near the Tasley overpass when he was hit by a vehicle that sped away, said Sgt. Michelle Cotten, state police spokeswoman. The crash occurred shortly after midnight.

Hines died at the scene, Cotten said.

A state trooper located a silver Chevrolet Silverado truck and charged the driver in connection with the crash, Cotten said.
