Researchers claim link between tsunamis and outer space
I mean, that sounds quite alarmist. TED BRYANT: There I was sitting on Aceh, in Indonesia, Boxing Day at eight o'clock in the morning and if you told me a tsunami was going to come in, I would never have believed you. And certainly if I was on Phuket in Thailand, I would have committed you to an insane asylum. If you wait long enough, a tsunami will come into any coastline of the ocean. MARK COLVIN: Now, it's fair to say that the theories of the Holocene Impact working group are not universally accepted. How much work do you think you still have to do to get full scientific acceptance? TED BRYANT: It'll be deadly. I'll be dead before the scientific community accepts what we believe. That's the nature of science, I mean, it's not stirring stuff out there, with people coming up with ideas and everybody gone...
Local prep athletes share Christmas memories
The first thing I did was call Danica, and that was all we could talk about until the concert came. My No. 1 priority was to get a band T-shirt. That was my favorite shirt for the longest time. My favorite band member was Justin Timberlake and Danica's was Lance Bass. We would always argue about who was better. Danica and I even made a up a dance to one of their songs -- "Tearin' Up My Heart."I went to the concert with Danica, her mom and my mom. I remember telling my mom I wasn't going to scream or anything.I ended up screaming through the whole concert and singing every song. If *NSYNC ever got back together I would definitely go to see them in concert again.-- Hanover Central sophomore softball player Jessica Toth, as told to Steve HanlonI saw Gramma TP'ing herself underneath the mistletoe last nightMy favorite Christmas experience is from a few years back.

Bicyclist fined $1,050 for traffic infraction
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- Kajuan Cornish didn't know he was such a danger on his bicycle, and now he's facing hefty fees that could have paid for him to have a car. One day after Gov. Timothy M. Kaine admitted the state's so-called abusive driver fees had failed and called for them to be repealed, Cornish was ordered to pay a fee of $1,050 for recklessly operating his 18-speed Huffy in an intersection during rush hour. "A bike with pedals -- a 4-year-old can ride a bike," Cornish said Thursday. "I could see it happen if I'm riding the wrong way down the expressway -- that's dumb." Cornish, 19, doesn't drive and was convicted of reckless driving in Newport News traffic court for a ticket he received after riding his bike across Warwick Boulevard.

After enduring postponements or cancellations to four dual matches already this season, the Gators (3-1) were anxious to compete against a highly-ranked squad, but it was the Blue Devils (2-0) who rallied from a 2-0 deficit to snap a five-match losing streak to Florida, which now holds a 30-4 all-time record against Duke. The Gators' last loss to the Blue Devils was a 4-3 decision on Feb. 9, 2003 in the finals of the National Team Indoor Championships. Florida went on to win the NCAA title later that season. The No. 1 pair of sophomore Megan Alexander and newcomer Marrit Boonstra produced the clinching 8-5 win over Amanda Granson and Melissa Mang, after Whitney Benik and Lolita Frangulyan topped Tara Iyer and Reka Zsilinszka, 8-6, on court No.
