Orangewood's Gendreau is Central Florida boys soccer player of year

Last weekend during a club soccer game, Alan Gendreau approached the man whose career numbers he's chasing.

"He asked me if I was nervous between my junior and senior years," said Mark Keymont, Bishop Moore's boys soccer coach, whose 144 career high-school goals between 1980 and 1982 is second only to Pine Ridge's Jason Mroczkowski's 154 goals between 1995 and 1998. "I told him not to be nervous. Just play the game, and things will fall into place."

With 136 career goals, Gendreau, a junior at Orangewood Christian, is closing in on both marks.

"Living up to expectations, it's a nerve-racking thing," Gendreau said. "Coming into a season and knowing that you could break the record, it's just kind of nerve-racking."

If Gendreau continues at the pace he was on this season, he has nothing to worry about.

Giants re-sign Vizquel

Now that Barry's gone, I also think he can be the elder statesman/team leader he clearly craves to be. Ed hit on the first useful talent evaluation I've seen here in a while: Chris Duncan. If he's available, wow! Huge HR hitter, right-handed, can play 1b, young, cheap. I'd be surprised if Cards give him up especially since he's the coach's son but I'd much rather do Lowry for Duncan rather than Cain for Cabrera. Now that I've taken a better look at the stats and the careers of the FAs, we should PLEASE disregard the fool's gold of Rowand, Lowell, Hunter. Jones may be worth a flyer if he's at 10 mill or less and Arod is worth it but I think it's a done deal with him and LA. I've listed these guys before: Juan Rivera, Nick Johnson, Rocco Baldelli ; all off injuries, aged 28-30, and trade value is at an all-time low.

Amgen Tour of CA 2008 - Stage 2 Team Reports

Team CSC had Fabian Cancellara and Gustav Larsson up front during Wednesday's mountain stage in Tour of California. The 152-kilometer third stage was won by Robert Gesink (Rabobank) ahead of overall leader, Levi Leipheimer (Astana). But Cancellara impressively managed to maintain his overall second place.

During the final of three very tough climbs Gesink and Leipheimer tore them selves loose from the rest of the front group, but following the decent they had 20 kilometers of flat road until the finish line in San Jos.

At one point Leipheimer was almost one and a half minute ahead of the two Team CSC riders, who were working together with the rest of the group of 14, which had gathered behind Gesink and Leipheimer.

Fabian Cancellara - kiss left, kiss right.

Social Media Metrics

Shaping the dialogue are the conversation's level and the insight of people whose opinions matter.

The issue isn't why, what, or how we should measure social media. There are answers for every one of those. We measure because it leads us down a path of sustainable results toward a process of continuous improvement. Even if we start aimed 180 degrees from where we want to go, with the combination of a plan and some basic metrics, not only will we get turned in the right direction, we'll actually get there. More practically, if we can't express our objectives and methodology quantitatively, we have zero chance of selling in our ideas. This doesn't mean that we run by numbers alone; we don't. But it means that at some point as a CMO you'll be up against the COO competing for dollars, and your CEO and CFO will be the ultimate arbiters.

Roses ‘n’ Razzies (Feb. 22)

ROSE (roz) n. One of the most beautiful of all flowers, a symbol of fragrance and loveliness. Often given as a sign of appreciation.RASPBERRY (raz'ber'e) n. A sharp, scornful comment, criticism or rebuke; a derisive, splatting noise, often called the Bronx cheer. We hereby deliver:* ROSES to our abundance of young local talent. We are continually impressed with the depth and variety of talent in our (sorta) little town. In the category of "early promise in the arts and sciences," we had much to applaud this week.We celebrate the expertise of the very young musicians who took part Tuesday in the Corvallis OSU Symphony's 2008 Children's Concert at the LaSells Stewart Center. They sang and played instruments with older international talent and made us proud. Then there is the high-wattage brilliance of the 175 Crescent Valley High School students who will participate today and Saturday in the Central Western Oregon Science Expo at Western Oregon University. Our best wishes and future hopes accompany them.

MTB News and Notes: A conversation with Greg Minnaar; New power at ...

Minnaar still managed to give a post-race interview, despite the pain.

Then, in the off-season, Minnaar learned that Honda was ending its sponsorship of the G Cross-Honda team, the squad Minnaar has led since 2005. Minnaar's understudy, teammate Matti Lehikoinen, inked a deal to lead Intense Cycle's team, but Minnaar remained without a team through much of the fall. Salvation came from the California-based Santa Cruz Syndicate team — for 2008, Minnaar will ride alongside the hard charging, hard drinking duo of Steve Peat and Nathan Rennie.

VeloNews caught Minnaar on the phone as he was heading into a house party near his home in Pietermaritzburg.

Get well, Gazza

At the risk of being thought hard-hearted, I would like to ask what it is about stories of wealthy footballers who choose the path of self-destruction that turn grown men into dewy-eyed, sickenly sympathetic individuals. The self-inflicted harm that sent George Best to an early grave was overlooked by those who rushed to pile tributes upon him. There are many more people, through no fault of their own, who will not get the sympathy they deserve because they couldn't kick a football. .

IDB approves US$176.7 million for urban transportation program for ...

The Inter-American Development Bank today approved a US$176.7 million loan to Brazil for an urban transportation program for its Federal District, where around 2.8 million commutes are made each day.

“This initiative will improve the mobility and accessibility for the population of the district, particularly its low-income segments, by further integrating its communities through financing of a modern Bus Rapid Transit System," said IDB team leader Rosana Brandao. “This will help to improve the circulation and safety of motorized and non-motorized forms of transportation."

The program will invest in road and urban infrastructure, including bus transfer stations, roadway and pedestrian safety, the construction of ramps at crosswalks, sidewalks and pedestrian walkways for persons with physical disabilities, the modernization of the traffic light system, bicycle paths or lanes, and the strengthening of institutional and management capacity in the area of transportation.
