Italy's president dissolves parliament

President Giorgio Napolitano made the decision after Premier Romano Prodi's center-left government fell late last month and subsequent efforts to form an interim government to change voting rules failed.

Prodi will continue as caretaker premier until the election, which must be held within 70 days of the dissolution of parliament.

Italy was plunged into political crisis after Prodi's government collapsed January 24 after only 20 months in power. Watch as Berlusconi bounces back »

The legislature was the second-shortest one in Italy's postwar history, according to Italian media.

Early elections represent a victory for Silvio Berlusconi, the conservative leader who has repeatedly demanded a return to the polls since the fall of Prodi's government.

SC resurrects Bhagat Singh

She claimed that she was going back to Barnala on February 1 this year.

As she and her sister reached near the chowk to board a bus, Parminder Singh and one assistant sub-inspector (ASI) wrongfully picked them up. She stated to have been brought to Sadar police station, where the two were illegally detained for two days.

The head constable also demanded Rs 50,000 to release them. On the contrary, the cop started outraging the modesty of the complainant and her sister. Finally, the complainant agreed to pay Rs 30,000. Rupees 30,000 was arranged and it was paid to the cop and they were allowed to go.

Taking cognisance of the matter, the commission ordered an inquiry under Section 17(ii) of the Protection of Human Rights Act,1993. The investigation is entrusted to the ADGP of the Commission Jyoti Trehan.

Oncogenes and Cancer

In some tumors, for example, the Fos transcription protein dimerizes with the Jun transcription factor to form the AP1 transcription factor, and this complex increases the expression of several genes that control cell division.21,22

Chromosomal translocations often activate transcription-factor genes in lymphoid cancers23 and sometimes do so in solid tumors (e.g., prostate cancer24; see Table 2 in the Supplementary Appendix). In certain sarcomas, chromosomal translocations that result in fused proteins occur consistently; in Ewing's sarcoma, for example, the EWS gene is fused with one of a number of partner genes, resulting in aberrant transcriptional activity of the fused proteins (see Table 2 in the Supplementary Appendix). The EWS protein is an RNA-binding molecule with a domain that, when fused to a heterologous DNA-binding domain, can greatly stimulate gene transcription.

Vandal spreads tacks to scupper cyclists on Beach Rd

AN anti-cyclist vandal who scattered road tacks in the path of bike riders could have killed someone, police say.

Officers today blasted the offender, saying only luck saved a rider from injury or death.

A large number of tacks, similar to drawing pins, were deliberately placed along Beach Rd in Mentone on Saturday and caused punctures to several cyclists' tyres.

Sen-Sgt Hans Harms, of the Kingston Traffic Management Unit, condemned the act of stupidity and accused the offender of derailing bids to ease tensions between drivers and cyclists.

Sen-Sgt Harms said a cyclist could have lost control and swerved into vehicles or other riders.

"This stupid act does not assist anyone.

"I, along with other organisations such as the Amy Gillett Foundation, are trying to work together with bicycle riders to ensure all road users are safe including vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

Sportswear cos riding high on tennis haute couture

When Maria Sharapova, last year's Australian Open runner-up, entered the court in the ongoing championship, she disappointed a few onlookers even before she took out her racquet. The aggrieved lot were the fashionistas, who were seeking out the haute couture of Paris in the Down Under land.

The purists from the top-notch fashion houses were expecting the Russian diva to put on display her Australian Open collection — Nike Sharapova Australian Open Flora dress.

The over-enthusiast had already spotted, a few days ago, Daniela Hantuchova slipping into a similar costume and sweating it out at Medibank International in Sydney. Expectations were high that at the Australian Open, Sharapova will wear something exclusive. But when she finally emerged in the same outfit — albeit in a different colour — their hopes were dashed.

None of the employees have seen the man conceal merchandise, but missing items are discovered in the store on the same day and occur within the same time period the suspect is present. Employees also reported empty shoe boxes where the suspect was seen for a long period of time. Dexter men’s sandals, size 9, worth $35, men’s Shaq high tops, size 11 1/2 , valued at $38 and blue and white Cross Trekker’s running shoes, size 7 ½, worth $25 were taken from the store.
