Return of the Native

It wasnt so much the final product that inspired him as the act of creating it.

Shady graduated from the Lego set to household appliances, becoming a handyman around the house. By his teens, Shady dreamed of being an electrical engineer when he grew up. But a 76 percent on his thanaweya amma exam in 1993 doomed him to the faculty of commerce, English section, at Cairo University. We are victims of an educational system that virtually assigns careers depending on how well you can memorize and spit back textbooks during exam time, he claims.

But Shady is one of those people who dont mind playing the hand they are dealt and making the most of it. After graduation, he landed a cushy job as an analyst in a large financial consulting firm. He was soon disillusioned, however, complaining of being treated as a second-class employee by a demotivating and abusive boss who seemed to only respect made in the West degrees.

Rural Pen: MRIs Show Scientists The Ways Of Love

Yes.

"The more scientists look, the more they're able to tease romance apart into its individual strands - the visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile, neurochemical processes that make it possible," writes Jeffrey Kluger in the Jan. 28 issue of Time.

Science, which tries to explain everything from Earth's creation to its extinction, has now tackled love. Much as I hate to admit it, they've pretty much described my courtship and marriage. Except for one thing.

One of the more interesting facts they've discovered is what attracts men to women and vice versa. Several studies have shown that men prefer women with large breasts and a high hip-to-waist ratio - the 1950s ideal of 36-26-36 - which are seen as signs of fertility. Women like men with a broad chest, muscular shoulders and a full beard, all signs of strength and virility.

Martinsville Bulletin, Inc.

When Rush “Mickey" Marshall Jenkins joined the Army about 18 months ago, he hoped to serve his country while also seeing new places.

But on Tuesday, Pfc. Jenkins' 22nd birthday, he was killed after his “Bradley fighting vehicle ran over a deeply embedded IED (improvised explosive device)," according to his brother, Sgt. George “Alex" Jenkins.

Mickey Jenkins' father, Ricky Jenkins of Grassy Creek, said he was told his son died around 10 a.m. Tuesday, but he did not know if that was U.S. time or Iraq time.

Alex Jenkins, who is one of Mickey Jenkins' four siblings, said the family learned of Mickey's death Wednesday afternoon.

Mickey Jenkins “and everyone riding in the back of the vehicle" were killed as a result of the blast, said Alex.

Deerfield annexation talks begin

Utica's Common Council begins to discuss a Deerfield Annexation bill and the session attracts a large crowd from Deerfield. The southern border of Deerfield extends to Utica's Bagg's Square area. Annexation would move that border about one mile to the north. The advantages to Deerfield, say those who favor annexation, would be that the area of the town annexed would get city police and fire protection, which would result in lower insurance rates. Utica also would extend to the area city water and gas mains as well as school facilities. Among Utica's advantages would be getting room to relocate the Mohawk River away from its current location at Bagg's Square and move it one mile north. That would rid the city of flooding problems along lower Genesee Street and give it room to build factories there and, perhaps, a new railroad passenger terminal. Opponents in Utica say the expense of annexation would be too great for the benefits received. 1908, 100 years ago Billboards banned Common Council members in Utica pass an ordinance prohibiting – under penalty of a $25 fine – the erection of "unsightly" billboards within city limits.

Borough go-slow on cards

LEWISHAM borough could be the first in the capital to get 20mph speed limits across the whole area.

Lewisham Council's sustainable development committee, which scrutinises the council's work on environmental issues, wants to make Lewisham the first London borough to be completely 20mph.

Showers in workplaces for cycling employees, tax-free loans for workers to buy bikes, more cycle racks and more free cycle training for children and adults are also among the proposals raised.

International Brain Awareness Week 2008

In the early 1900s, Sigmund Freud, Alois Alzheimer and Harvey Cushing were building their careers in neuroscience. Freud published his groundbreaking work The Interpretation of Dreams, Alzheimer identified Alzheimer’s disease, and Cushing was establishing neurosurgery as a specialty.

A century later, the Society for Neuroscience has more then 38,000 members and a Google search on neuroscience brings up more than nine million hits. Neuroscience has become one of the leading fields of scientific endeavor and almost daily scientific papers are published detailing new findings about the brain and its functions. .
