A Personal Rememberance by John Allen, League Board Member
In 1972, I was halfway home with a flat tire and walked into a bike shop that was just closing. Sheldon stayed late to fix it. That's how I first met him. There were 46 bicycles in or around his house "with a few shared wheels", by his recent count, mostly in his basement. He didn't buy bicycles off the shelf -- as a challenge to his mechanical ingenuity, and a way to spend less money and spend more time doing what he liked to do, he cobbled up customized bicycles from parts he acquired mostly through special deals, barter or secondhand, to suit himself or someone in his family. He often came up with a something unique, clever and useful. You may read about his bicycles on his Web site. He had an eye for style, but also, one or two rusty clunkers hung out by the back door getting rustier, for the quick ride to the convenience store, and several old hulks of bikes lived under the front porch.

Jupiter's boys face tough road
You just have to play good basketball at this time of the year," Gibson said. "But it's always good to have home cooking." Making the cutAfter one round of playoffs, eight girls' basketball teams from Palm Beach County are still alive. That number will shrink by at least three after Thursday night's regional semifinal games. Boynton Beach (19-8) travels to Olympic Heights (15-8), Palm Beach Lakes (22-5) hosts Atlantic (24-4), and Trinity Christian (18-5) is at Lake Worth Christian (17-10). Suncoast made an unexpected early exit, losing to Rockledge 70-55. The Chargers finished 21-6, but had played nearly the past month of the season and last week's playoff loss without injured starters Ariana Jackson and Ashley Watson. The game was tied with three minutes to go, but Rockledge forced a number of turnovers that made Suncoast foul to try and stay in the game.
Toy Recall Prompts CPSC Reform Bill
WASHINGTON, D.C.Bike manufacturers could feel the backlash from a recent spate of recalls that have raised a cry for stricter product regulation from federal legislators. In the last four months more than 10 million toys have been recalled. In addition, the Consumer Product Safety Commission recently recalled 4.2 million Aqua Dots craft kits. Millions of parents are asking how this could happen. The truth is the agency charged with their childrens safety is hamstrung by a lack of resources and outdated regulations, said Senator Mark Pryor, D-Ark., in a Nov. 8 press release. Pryor, along with co-sponsor Sena-tor Daniel Inouye, D- Hawaii, introduced Senate Bill 2045 to increase the effectiveness of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The bill seeks to authorize additional funding for the agency to increase staff levels, improve antiquated testing facilities, increase CPSC agents at U.S.

Late February means early spring in western Colorado, in spite of the calendar lagging a couple weeks behind. Spring brings Spring Break (breakaway?) for many valley residents but even more important for those of who watch the skies, it’s migration. In particular, we’re keyed to the passing of sandhill cranes on their way north to summer nesting and breeding grounds. While there’s hardly an easier way than to simply stake out a seat in the backyard and look up, two festivals offer up-close and personal looks at sandhill cranes and bits of education as well. The most local of the festivals is the Eckert Crane Festival, this year scheduled for two Saturdays, March 15 and 22. The event is co-sponsored by Surface Creek Winery and Gallery in Eckert and the Black Canyon Chapter of the Audubon Society.
Complaints against police nearly double
In all, 88 officers were investigated internally since 2005, and 27 received some form of discipline. In that time, at least eight police officers were either fired or left the department, and five were suspended for at least one shift. The number of allegations isn't so large when put into perspective, said police Sgt. Robb Harry.Two-thirds of the investigations conducted during the three-year period led to no action because the employee was found to either have done nothing wrong or there was not enough evidence to support allegations of wrongdoing.Of the rest, most of the discipline was minor: oral or written reprimands. About 15 percent resulted in suspensions, resignations or firings. No officer was demoted during that timeframe. The increase in complaints comes at a time when the Police Department is already facing questions about its image.
Jupiter-Saturn-like Planets Discovered In Faraway Solar System Like ...
Most theorists think that the biggest planet in our solar system formed at Jupiter's location because that is the closest to the sun that ice can form. Saturn is the next biggest because it is in the next location further away, where there is less primordial material available to form planets." "Theorists have wondered whether gas giants in other solar systems would form in the same way as ours did. This system seems to answer in the affirmative." The fact that astronomers found the planets during the first event that allowed such a detection suggests that these scaled-down versions of our solar system are very common, he added. Previously, astronomers had found four planets using microlensing; two of those were found by the Ohio State University-based MicroFUN group.
