| If not an ATV, how about these gifts?
With Christmas on the way and you already aware that purchasing a new 3/4-ton, 4-wheel-drive pickup truck for your outdoors man or woman is out of the question, here are some less-expensive, but nice items that any hunter, angler and all-around wildlife lover will enjoy. Titanium bifocal sunglasses — If I lost the polarized sunglasses that I now use for all my fishing — especially when there are knots to be tied and I need to see clearly up close while being shaded from harsh sunlight — I'd have what my children call a hissie fit. My indispensable "shades" are the Ono's Trading Company's new gray lens (other lens colors are available), ultra-light titanium-framed sunglasses. The sunglasses feature magnifying bifocals with 1.50, 2.00 or 2.50 power (I use 2.00) positioned below eye level so they won't interfere with distance vision.
Doggone bills: Pet insurance bites medical bills
When picking an insurer, she suggests the policy allow freedom of choice in selecting a veterinarian, cover some preventive care, and not reduce coverage when the animal gets older. Strauss said it makes sense from a financial standpoint to insure new puppies and kittens because insurance generally is less expensive for younger animals."It's well worth the monthly payments in the end," Strauss said, sharing her personal praise of Veterinary Pet Insurance. She cites its "excellent response time" in reimbursing the family, noting, "They don't try to dictate what kind of care you should have, (and they) take doctors' recommendations."Insurance firms range from ASPCA Pet Health Insurance that helps support the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to Veterinary Pet Insurance, the nation's oldest and largest provider, founded by veterinarians in 1982, and insuring more than 460,000 pets nationwide. To find a good insurance fit, study all the options and review policy limits, pre-existing condition rules and the fine print.
Spray-Painted Swastikas Mar Pfluger Bridge
Vandals spray-painted swastikas on the seats, rails and sidewalks of the Pfluger Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge for all to see. The bridge is just more than six years old and a popular spot for those who visit the hike and bike trail along Lady Bird Lake. Workers for the city's graffiti abatement program have their hands full. This past weekend they found more than 20 new cases of graffiti damage, including this latest case in Downtown Austin. "It's a mess," said Tony Casarez, coordinator of the program. "That's gonna be the real tough one is getting the sidewalks cleaned up." Casarez's crews were busy Monday, cleaning what they could. In many cases, they'll use a pressure washer and chemicals, but the damage above Lady Bird Lake will need special treatment.
Nevadans in quake: "Scariest thing ever"
WELLS, Nev. (AP) -- No serious injuries were reported but a number of area residents said they were scared to death by the 6.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked northeast Nevada early Thursday. "It was scary, the scariest thing ever," said Karen Swabb, who lives in Clover Valley near the epicenter of the quake about 11 miles southeast of Wells. "I never imagined it could be like that," she told the Elko Daily Free Press. She said friends in Wells told her "one of their fish flew out of the bowl." Donna Anderson of Wells said there was no advance warning before the quake hit at 6:16 a.m. "It just immediately jumped into rattling the walls," she told The Associated Press from the Wagon Wheel residential motel where she lives with her dog, Sis.
Sidecar takes centre of collector’s attention
The Ural story begins in 1939, during the USSRs pre-World War II planning. Despite the Molotov/von Ribbentrop Pact, the Soviet Union knew it would soon be going to war against Adolf Hitler, the ruthless dictator of the German Third Reich. Joseph Stalin ordered the military to prepare all areas of operation, including the ground forces that would defend the Russian motherland against invading German Panzers, ground troops, and Special Forces. Having seen the effects of the Blitzkrieg against the Polish Army, mobilisation was of paramount importance to the USSR. A meeting was held at the USSR Defence Ministry to discuss what motorcycle model was most suitable for the Red Army. The Army had wanted to modernise its equipment after termination of the military conflict with Finland, as the motorcycles it had been using had not worked satisfactorily.
