Too much adulation is barely enough

I say the coverage we have of the Oscars is too little, too brief, too fly-by-night.

We do not need to cut back these orgies of acclaim, we need to extend them, to spread out in minute detail the glittering panoply of famous, soon-to-be-famous and should-not-have-found-fame-in-the-first-place participants.

What, apart from interest rates, rental prices and attaining eternal slenderness, do we obsess about more than celebrity? What water cooler topic fills our office days, our magazine literature and our news and current affairs shows? Famous people. Famous people and what they do and say and wear and buy and decide to marry in a European castle.

We might not know what some of our relatives have been up to recently but you'd be hard pressed to find a friend or colleague who doesn't know Nicole Kidman is expecting a baby.

More Insurer Trials Likely

White collar criminal cases of this kind are very difficult to get your hands around as a prosecutor," said Rueckert, who wasn't involved in the General Re/AIG case. "They're very difficult and time-consuming to investigate" and tend to involve reams of documents, including e-mails, he added.

Prosecutors in the General Re/AIG case had "inflammatory informal communications" in taped phone calls and e-mails, in which people tend to feel freer and more informal than in a regular letter, Rueckert said. "It comes back to be particularly harmful to them, particularly in a trial where it is presented as evidence."

Prosecutors aren't saying whether they expect to seek more indictments in the General Re/AIG case.

"Our investigation is continuing," said Steven A.

F. Culver, 100, news carrier

Floyd Culver, 100, of South Philadelphia, a beloved newspaper deliveryman for 60 years, died Tuesday at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital after suffering a stroke. Seven days a week since 1947, Mr. Culver (respectfully called Mr. Floyd by his clients) loaded up his battered black bicycle, equipped with an oversize basket, and delivered The Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News to more than 300 homes along his route. Every morning, Mr. Culver rose at 2, cooked a breakfast of bacon, eggs, grits and coffee, and picked up his newspapers from a storefront at 18th and Bainbridge Streets. No matter the weather, Mr. Culver delivered newspapers faithfully to customers who loved and respected him. He earned about $40 a day. "He was more reliable than the post office," said his daughter, Brenda Taylor.

Should officers use tasers?

They are Wade Erickson, trooper since October 1999; Jon Froemke, trooper since December 2007; Brian Helget, trooper since December 2007; Tim Koehler, trooper since May 2000, and Troy McCormack, trooper since June 1994.

Prior to receiving a Taser, troopers must complete a two-day training course, and they must complete a one-day recertification course annually. Trooper training standards exceed the manufacturers recommendations.

A patrol spokesman would not describe what kind of "uncooperative" behavior was involved.

The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation.

"This is a traumatic event for a lot of people," superintendent Tim O'Malley said. "Someone has died and in fairness to that person, the troopers, family members and others who may have been affected, we need to make sure that we're accurate and thorough."

The man who died was identified as Mark C.

Inland factories slow production, index says

The slowdown washing over Inland Southern California's economy may be filtering down to the manufacturing sector, a report released Friday showed.

The Purchasing Managers Index, which measures factory activity in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, declined to 46.6 in January from 50.9 in December, the Institute of Applied Research and Policy Analysis at Cal State San Bernardino reported.

A reading below 50 suggests that the factory sector is contracting, although economists look for three consecutive months before considering it a trend. The Inland PMI has showed manufacturing growth for most of the past four years.

Chelsea stumps for Mom at YSU

Politicians talk about the wonderful things they are going to do for people, Mastro said. After hearing Chelsea Clinton, Mastro said it appears her mother ‘‘has a more developed idea of how to actually deliver on her promises.'' Still Mastro said, she planned to watch Tuesday's debate between the two candidates before making up her mind. In a brief introduction, Clinton stated her ‘‘passionate'' support for her mother and said, ‘‘I'm here to talk to you about whatever is important to you to think about who to support on March 4.'' Questions ranged from issues such as health care and free trade — which have been flash points between the two candidates — to what can be done to give Youngstown students a chance to stay home and have good careers. Clinton talked about her mother's plans to stop tax loopholes for companies that outsource jobs, creating programs that would create jobs that can't be outsourced by rebuilding the country's infrastructure, and creating green-collar jobs by erecting environmentally friendly buildings or retrofitting existing structures.
