Another disabled person used as bomber
BAGHDAD | A man in a wheelchair laden with explosives was pushed into an operations center in Samarra on Monday, where he blew himself up, killing the center's deputy commander. It was the third time this month, according to Iraqi security forces, that people with disabilities have been used to carry explosives that killed themselves and others. Interior Minister Jawad Bolani said the bomber might have unwittingly carried the bomb. He described the bomber as a regular visitor to the police station who was known to commanders there. Police said the man said he needed to speak with the major general in charge of police and military operations in Samarra. He agreed to speak to his deputy, Brig. Gen. Abdul-Jabbar Rabi, because the commander was in a meeting.

Many others flocked to the makeshift tribute, adding to a growing number of bouquets of flowers, dozens of stuffed animals and candles that flickered in the snow as tearful passersby stopped to pay their respects. Children and adults alike placed notes at the site, leaving messages for the Grade 6 student that read, "We will miss your smile" and "We love you Karissa." A poster with a photo of Karissa was filling up with signatures from several people and a long poem described the girl as "an innocent rose bud ... taken too soon." Ten-year-old Emily Knickle, who attends the same elementary school as Karissa, came to the memorial with her mother and reflected on when she first saw the brown-haired girl with the bright smile. "I can remember the first time she walked into the playground," she said.

More than 40 military trucks ferried troops toward the Iraqi border on Wednesday after a heavy snowfall slowed down Turkey's ground incursion against Kurdish rebels. Turkey, however, says it will continue the incursion until it achieves its military goals. U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, ahead of his arrival in Turkey later Wednesday, said in India that he will tell Turkish leaders they need to wrap up their military operations in northern Iraq quickly, and that the ongoing assault must not last longer than a week or two. .
Eons Fitness Survey Shows Boomers Haven't Lost a Step in Their Quest ...
CHARLESTOWN NAVY YARD, BOSTON, Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Eons(TM), the media company for lovin' life on the flip side of 50, today announced the results of its inaugural Eons Boomer Fitness Survey of the fitness attitudes and behaviors of the most physically active and healthy generation in history. Baby boomers who fueled the aerobics movement and who crowded running paths across the country are now reaping the dividends of their active lifestyles, with more than half saying they are in excellent or above-average condition, according to the survey. "Baby boomers are the generation that made Jane Fonda's aerobics videos best-sellers and they took up Jim Fixx's challenge to become a nation of runners," said Jeff Taylor, founder and CEO of Eons. "They have goals they want to accomplish, whether it's travel, building new relationships, or just living the biggest life possible, and boomers know they can only do that if they keep their chassis in great shape." Scott "Q" Marcus, an Eons fitness advisor whose "Walking the Walk" blog on eons.com inspires readers with practical, powerful and effective fitness and weight-loss advice, said, "The key to fitness is to remember that 'small steps done regularly always generate better results than large steps done intermittently.' In other words, it's better to walk a block - and actually do it - than promise yourself you'll run a mile, but sleep in instead.
2 little sisters mourned in W. Deptford
The family in the slate blue house on Red Bank Avenue was quiet, neighbors said, but everyone seemed to know the little girls. Aaliah, 10, and her sister, India, 6, rode their bicycles, waved hello and loved to play with the dog next door. "They were sweet little girls. It's just a tragedy that something like this happened," said neighbor John Randolph, 74. Aaliah Scott and India Duncan were found strangled Thursday night in their West Deptford home after a 90-minute standoff between police and their half-brother Marqueese Lee, 20. Yesterday, Lee was charged in the murders of the girls and aggravated assault on their mother, Lucille Bevans, 38, who fled the home around 8:30 p.m. after Lee allegedly hit her on the head with a hammer, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office.
ORU alumni support sought
Uncertainty remained Saturday about what effect Richard Roberts' resignation as president will have on Oral Roberts University, but some observers said it was a step toward improvement. "I think people are going to be waiting and watching: OK, can it survive without a Roberts at the helm?" said Donald R. Vance, professor of biblical languages and literature. Vance said he thinks alumni need to support ORU as it undergoes this transition, after being led for 42 years by a Roberts. ORU professors are committed to the school's evangelical Christian mission, but that might not be obvious without a TV minister as president, he said. Christian colleges across the country are led by non-ministers -- "it will just be different for us." ORU leaders have not addressed what role, if any, Roberts will have at the university.
