Jupiter Island 'reviewing its options' to regulate the number of ...

State Road 707 winding north and south through the lush Town of Jupiter Island has long been a paradise for residents and area bicyclists, but that popularity is now causing concern for both.

“It's one of the most beautiful roads in Martin County," said John Silvia, owner of Pro Cycles in Stuart. “And with the trees and the winding curves, it's one of the most popular biking roads as well."

But the attributes luring cyclists to the meandering, canopied drive also make it dangerous for the competing modes of travel, said Town Director of Public Safety Chief Ted Gonzales.

Gonzales recently sent a letter to area bicycle shops and clubs in an attempt to reach out to the groups and urge riders to comply with the rules of the road, informing them the town commission is “reviewing its options" to regulate the number of cyclists that can ride together in a single group in order to make the town “as safe as possible."

Gonzales said the town sees some 800 cyclists in groups of 40 to 75 pedaling through town on the weekends — some of whom disregard stop signs and ride three and four abreast, he said.

China can build things. Why can't India?

India's top science and technology official is in China, making excuses about why his country's infrastructure is so shoddy. Shanghai has brilliant new skyscrapers and museums and parks and trains – and Bombay can't manage to have a decent airport. According to Minister for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal, it's all because of democracy. “There is a different model of growth in our country," Sibal told reporters in Beijing, according to this report from wire service PTI carried on Indian portal Rediff.com. “We can't, for example, build a Pudong overnight."

Well, neither did the Chinese. Pudong today is the result of more than a decade's worth of work and planning and investment. The place is hardly paradise; Pudong can feel overwhelming, especially along the district's broad boulevard.

JOHN L. SMITH: Fattest City? Biased magazine didn't even count video ...

How dare Men's Fitness magazine dub Las Vegas America's Fattest City. I'm so angry I nearly spilled my gravy shake.

Clearly the magazine doesn't understand that physical fitness has a whole other meaning here. The Las Vegas lifestyle is not conducive to traditional calisthenics. People have been known to spill a lot of beer doing jumping jacks. Around here, we improvise.

Did the magazine, for example, take into account that a majority of Las Vegans never sleep, which means they live twice as hard as residents of other cities and, therefore, are double the girth?

In Las Vegas, a large segment of the male population long ago gave up on "six-pack abs" and moved on to the more challenging "24-pack abs." It takes great dedication to reach such widths.

Readers Respond to Council-Marine Recruiters Controversy

Please, City Council, just focus in on local issues and let Berkeley become the sleepy liberal college town it deserves to be. Anh-vu Doan • ACCEPTING RESPONSIBILITY? Editors, Daily Planet: I would like to address an argument made by a number of folks in the media and made last night at the Berkeley City Council Meeting. The argument goes: “Support the troops because it is the government's responsibility for the unjust war." I think this denial of troop responsibility is a denial of their conscience, and thus, their dignity. They exercise this conscience when they generate the habits that create the kind of person they become, when they chose to enter the military, and when they continuously chose to sustain their participation in an immoral and unjust war. The troops as persons are responsible.

Teen who beat homeless man nets jail sentence

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The last of three young men who beat a homeless man who bought them beer has been sentenced.

Officials said 16-year-old Shawn Soldier Glancy of Portland will serve 70 months after pleading guilty Friday in Clackamas County Circuit Court to an assault charge.

Prosecutors said 43-year-old Andrew Gonzalez made a beer run for Glancy and two other underage young men.

In return, prosecutors said, they planned to kill Gonzalez for the thrill of it and then steal his backpack and bicycle.

But a homeless woman camped nearby at a boat ramp along the Willamette River scared them off by yelling that the police were coming.

Authorities said Gonzalez barely survived the beating and stabbing he took.

A 17-year-old from Gresham and a 20-year-old transient have also pleaded guilty.

Godwin: Cops weren't on job

Once a hearing is held, the officers may appeal the results. No departmental charges have been filed, and no administrative hearing has yet been set, Higgins said.

One of the suspended officers entered the force about a week ago and was put back to work Wednesday. The other eight were veterans who remain suspended until the investigation ends, Godwin said.

"These are not bad officers. They just used bad judgment yesterday," he said.

Coalition Conduct in the Ground War

Unlike Coalition air forces, American and British ground forces used cluster munitions extensively in populated areas. Human Rights Watch found evidence of ground-launched submunitions (known as grenades) in residential neighborhoods across the country, including in Basra, al-Hilla, Karbala', al-Najaf, and Baghdad. A military list of duds reported after the war shows that the use of these weapons was widespread along the battle route to Baghdad, including in and around other populated areas.237 While these strikes were directed at Iraqi military targets, the weapons' inaccuracy, broad footprints, and large numbers of submunitions caused hundreds of civilian casualties.

Use of Cluster Munitions

Coalition use of ground-launched cluster munitions far outstripped the use of air-dropped models.

Wayne Henning: Stadium's future rests in hands of city, residents

Roberts Stadium has served our community well for more than 50 years. However, it has become dated and is no longer competitive with similar venues.

We have a difficult decision to make about the future of the stadium, and it is a decision that will be made with deliberate thought.
