Ready for the Floor is the boom tune people will return to again and again, an anthem for misfits looking to waltz beyond the dancefloor, with Alexis Taylor's soulful yelp providing the geeky male lead (see review at right). Shake a Fist is a dizzy skyscraper of a track, full to the brim with sonic smarts and tricks yet hard-wired to a snaking, nagging groove. More wordy fare is provided by the softshoe r'n'b of Wrestlers and the hugely Hot Chippy Hold On, in which the band's bookish tendencies meet their hedonistic selves head on. As great leaps go, Made in the Dark lands very much on its feet. www.hotchip.co.uk . JIM CARROLL. Hot Chip : Made in the Dark .

Our concern is for the safety of the Serbs and other ethnic minorities in Kosovo....We'll strongly warn against any attempts at repressive measures, should Serbs in Kosovo decide not to comply with this unilateral proclamation of independence." Russia is worried "that Kosovo's move [may set] a dangerous precedent for separatist groups globally." (Press Association) In fact, "the most immediate diplomatic aftershocks" following the news of Kosovo's independence declaration "came in the Caucasus, where two separatist regions of the former Soviet state of Georgia announced they too would be seeking independence. 'Both South Ossetia and Abkhazia have more political and legal justification to declare independence than Kosovo does,' said the South Ossetian president, Eduard Kokoity.

The Empire strikes out, and sports will be the downfall
Welcome to the decline and fall of the Roman empire, U.S. edition. Remember the great Roman empire? Its decline was not caused not just by greed, lust and indifference to civic virtues. Its decline — and you could look this up, except you won't find it anywhere — was caused by an unhealthy preoccupation with sports. The Romans became so lazy and soft and wealthy, their way of life crumbled as they filled local arenas for chariot races, gladiator fights and the occasional Christian fed to the lions. Sound familiar? Their empire and our empire have scary similarities. In ancient Rome, public executions were held at midday; in modern America, we have "The Jerry Springer Show." You think the emperor Romulus Augustulus was worried about crumbling roads and growing crime? No.

Hitting a roadblock: profit vs. bike path
"All winter, how many bikes pass here? On a day like this, I see one or two. There are more pedestrians using the path than cyclists," Beverley Russell fumed yesterday. Russell, owner of an antiques shop on de Maisonneuve Blvd. W. near Lambert Closse St., and other business owners on the strip of de Maisonneuve between St. Marc St. and the old Forum say the bicycle path has put a severe dent in their profit margins since its construction began last spring. The path, which hugs the sidewalk on the southern side of de Maisonneuve from Berri St. west through downtown, opened in November. .
