| Safety fear could push bike tours off summit
WAILUKU » A preliminary assessment does not seem to bode well for bicycle tours at Haleakala National Park. Park Superintendent Marilyn Parris said the draft assessment by a federal safety panel found bicycle tours pose among the highest risks of recreational injury and accidents in national parks. Parris suspended bicycle tours in the park on Oct. 10, after a couple of fatal accidents, and is planning to arrive at a decision about the future of the activity at Haleakala by mid-March. Brother, Can You Spare A Euro?
The stock may dip upon its removal from the Dow Jones Industrial Average (announced February 11), but there can be no doubt that this company has benefitted from the weak US Dollar (see figure 1). Figure 1: Altria stock has benefited from growth in exports. Source: Stockcharts.com Last but not least, there is always gold. Gold is considered the ultimate hedge against inflation, and the ultimate store of value. Because gold is priced in US Dollars, an inverse relationship exists between the two; in other words, when the USD Dollar is falling, the price of gold tends to rise, and vice versa. Because of this and other factors, gold has performed very well for the past several years. The dollar's five-year plunge has been accompanied by a rally in gold and other precious metals (see figure 2).
Gold meddlers
When the pair came off their bike, the accident was said to have happened in Glyfada but it was dealt with by traffic police from Kifissia - in the north of Athens. Confined to hospital they were unable to make a meeting with the IOC who subsequently gave them an extra 72 hours in which to explain their non-appearance. That allowed time for the Greek Olympic Committee to withdraw the athletes from the Games yesterday. When they face the IOC on Monday, the pair are likely to be facing a two-year ban from the sport. It was the worst possible lead into Friday's opening ceremony, especially as Kenteris was due to light the flame, but Jacques Rogge, the IOC president insists the Games are big enough to overcome the embarrassment. "We have had big doping cases before that have not damaged the quality of the Games," he said.

I would be very interested in hearing some of the problems that are causing our state police to have to work under conditions most people would find difficult if not impossible. There are so many rules and so many people you have to be responsible to, it just doesn't seem fair...and when they ask for a little understanding, it seems that everyone thinks being a police officer means you somehow become less than human. I am finding in my research that there is far more occupational stress than stress that is felt through critical incidents. Is that true, and what would it take to make the job easier, not only for the officers, but also for the administration, I am sincerely interested in learning more. CB Top 5: Worst Oscar Winners
Rich Knight: Ridley Scott is the most overrated director in Hollywood. And I think the fact that he lost best director to Steven Soderbergh that year, who was on fa fa fa fire for both Erin Brockovich and Traffic is a testament to how much this proves my theory that he sucks. Gladiator is the kind of pump your fist and yell film that Braveheart popularized and made violence a household name in the Oscars yearly selection. That said, while Braveheart had its moments of brilliance as Mel Gibson waxed philosophical about freedom in an almost poetic manner, Ridley Scotts tribute to togas and sandals winds up feeling like one long, stiff monologue with sporadic intervals of way too fast combat that gets lost in terrible cinematography. If not for a brilliant Joaquin Phoenix, who was rightly nominated, but wrongly snubbed, this film would be as bad and as hokey as Oliver Stones (another hackney director) Alexander.

Diabetes lurks in suburbs
According to the ICES Toronto Diabetes Atlas, neighbourhoods with the highest rates of diabetes had low incomes and high concentrations of visible minority residents. Walking or cycling was difficult and there was poor access to healthy resources, such as grocery stores and diabetes education programs. Governments could help lower diabetes rates in these areas by: Designating some streets or parts of streets for pedestrian traffic only. Increasing the number of places that people can walk to in the suburbs, like parks, libraries, schools, daycares and shops. Changing zoning bylaws that prohibit stores from being built in residential areas. Providing tax incentives to encourage grocery stores and fruit stands to locate in high-need areas and for convenience stores to offer healthier "on the go" food options.
