Housing crisis begins to hit suburbs

In April 2007, Connecticut had the third-highest foreclosure rate in the nation and it remained in the top 10 in May and June before falling off the top of the list in July. The difference between Tuesday's RealtyTrac report and those from 2007 is where the foreclosures took place. In 2007, the foreclosures were happening in Bridgeport, New Haven and Hartford. Now, those white-and-black auction signs are popping up more frequently in suburbs like Fairfield and Milford as well as Stamford.

Just two months ago, RealtyTrac data showed that 657 families living in 14 Connecticut municipalities were in preforeclosure, which means they were delinquent and a foreclosure filing was imminent. Those 14 cities and towns represented a cross-section of Fairfield County and other cities and towns in the Bridgeport area.

Theft of deputy’s SUV ends in arrest

A shoeless, drunken man allegedly broke out the window of a Pierce County sheriff's deputy's SUV and took off in the idling patrol vehicle Wednesday. The man ditched the Ford Expedition on a dead-end road less than two miles away, stole a bicycle and a pair of shoes and was arrested within an hour after a police dog tracked him down, sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.

"This guy went to the extreme by smashing the window out," he said. "We don't usually have people trying to steal fully marked police cars that are locked."

The man was treated at a local hospital for dog bites and was to be booked in the Pierce County Jail on two counts of first-degree theft and one count each of malicious destruction of property, resisting arrest and drunken driving.

Troyer gave this account of what investigators believe happened:

The deputy, a 15-year veteran of the force whose name was not released, had responded about 7:45 a.m.

New Era Canning Company recalls beans

New Era Canning Company recalls beans Cans of beans may cause botulism Posted: Thursday, January 24, 2008 at 11:20 a.m.

New Era Canning Company has issued a recall on cans of green beans and garbanzo beans because they may cause botulism.

New Era Canning Company is recalling all cans of #10 (6 to 7 pounds) green beans and garbanzo beans because they may have been processed under conditions which could have led to production of botulinum toxin, which can cause life-threatening illness or death.

“The Illinois Department of Public Health has confirmed the recalled green beans have been distributed in Illinois," said state public health director Dr. Damon Arnold.

The codes on the affected product begin with the numbers “00249" or the letter “GREEN" or “GARB." The recall only affects the products in the large #10 cans.

Frail admits time running out in Hearts' bid to make top six

We know how good a team Motherwell are and we know that they are one of the teams we are chasing," he said."If we go there and get the victory then it obviously helps us close the gap. There's still not a lot in it. Obviously people always look at the league positions but in terms of points it's really still quite close. We showed in the three games prior to the Celtic match what we are capable of and I think at Parkhead we still managed to play some good football."If we keep playing away and keep fighting for one another then we will win more games than we will lose and hopefully make it a better end to the season than maybe a lot of people thought it would be." .

Posted by: Von Maur Employee Location: Wichita on Dec 7, 2007 at 11:41 AM As a current employee of Von Maur in Wichita, KS, this all hits to close to home. In my department we are like family and to think of losing them is just to much to handle. My heart goes out to the families and friends of the victims, no one can ever believe something like this could happen to them or at the place they work. It gives me a tremendous sence of vunerablity to just think about going back to work even though it did not happen here in Wichita. How are you suppose to go on like nothing happened.
